The cherry tomato is the most famous product of the island of Santorini. Arrived on the island in the late 17th century from Egypt. Once planted in the volcanic soil of Santorini gave a small tomato fruit with thicker peel and full flavor that you will not find anywhere else in the world. In the middle of the 19th century more than ten industries for the processing of cherry tomato operated on the island. The cultivation was abandoned after the earthquake of 1956 and the development of tourism. Today the Union of Santorini Cooperatives is the only industry processing the cherry tomatoes at it’s premises in the area of Monolithos. You can find authentic Santorini cherry tomato paste, sweets and other products in the shop of Santorini Cooperatives in the village of Pyrgos.
